Press Clippings
One of the useful collections that our volunteers can turn to when conducting research are the files of press cuttings that we “inherited” from the local newspaper, The Fife Herald when it was moving premises. The period covered in this collection is mainly the mid-twentieth century, but with indexing, we are often able to uncover stories that are not easily found by other means.
“News is only the first rough draft of history” is a quotation often used, but nevertheless the information acquired can lead to our researchers finding information that is not available elsewhere.
We also have recourse to the British Newspaper Archive on-line, allowing researchers to access local and national press stories that may feature reports about the local area.
The titles of particular significance for Cupar and surrounding area are The Fife Herald, Fifeshire Advertiser, Fifeshire Journal, St Andrews Citizen and Dundee Courier.
In addition to the press cuttings, the deposit of press cutting books from local businesses or organisations are of value. Examples of these include those of Speedie Brothers Auction Mart in Cupar and the Boys Brigade.
